Why is the AHCY gene not included in Stride's Methylation report?
We rigorously select the genes included in our reports, each requiring evidence from human studies, reproducibility, and relevance to modifiable lifestyle changes. The AHCY gene, while important in certain contexts, is not included in our report for the following reasons:
Benign Variants: Two of the primary SNPs associated with the AHCY gene, rs41301825 and rs13043752, are now regarded as benign and have no significant effect. Additionally, these risk alleles are quite rare, with frequencies of 0.6% and 1.9% respectively, making them less relevant for the majority of our users.
Extremely Rare Mutation: The third variant, rs121918608, is not a typical SNP but rather a rare mutation associated with serious health conditions, including hypermethioninemia and severe developmental delays. Due to its rarity and the severity of its consequences, it is not suitable for inclusion in our reports.
Our goal is to provide genetic insights that are both meaningful and applicable to a broad audience. Including variants that are either benign or extremely rare with serious health implications would not align with our mission to deliver actionable and relevant information to our users.
