What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that can offer genuine health benefits when you take in enough of them. What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are types of dietary fibre your body can’t digest but your gut bacteria can ferment. As your microbes break them down, they produce beneficial compounds, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, acetate and propionate. In short, prebiotics are the fuel that helps your beneficial microbes grow, diversify and function well.

These SCFAs help nourish the cells lining your gut, strengthen the gut barrier and calm inflammation. That supports not only digestion but also immune function, metabolic health and, through the gut–brain axis, aspects of mood and energy.

Not all fibre is the same

Two more P’s worth knowing

Paraprobiotics are inactive, non-living forms of beneficial bacteria, or fragments of them such as cell-wall components. Your immune system can still recognise and respond to these, rather like responding to a blueprint instead of the finished building. Polyphenols are plant compounds found in berries, dark chocolate, green tea, coffee and colourful vegetables. Best known as antioxidants, they are also metabolised by your gut bacteria into compounds that nourish beneficial microbes and support postbiotic production.
