Which methylation test is best?

For most people, the best methylation test is a genetic test that covers the main methylation pathways rather than MTHFR alone. It should be processed by an accredited lab and come with a report you can act on, plus someone qualified to explain it. If what you want is a biological age score, you're shopping for a different product: an epigenetic test.

Stride makes one of these tests, so read this guide with that in mind. We've set out the criteria we'd use to judge any methylation test, ours included, and we've said where another option is the better fit.

This article explains:

△ The two kinds of methylation test and how to tell them apart
△ Six things to check before you buy
△ The main options compared, including 23andMe data and 10X Health
△ Which test suits your situation

Genetic and epigenetic tests measure different things

The phrase “methylation test” covers two products that answer different questions, and it's easy to buy one when you wanted the other.

🧬

Genetic methylation test

Reads inherited variants in the genes that make your methylation enzymes, such as MTHFR, MTR and COMT. It shows how your methylation pathways are built. Your genes don't change, so you only test once.

⌛

Epigenetic (biological age) test

Measures methylation marks at thousands of points on your DNA and feeds them into an algorithm, often called an epigenetic clock, to estimate biological age. The marks shift with age, lifestyle and illness, so the result can change.

Product listings don't always make the difference obvious. If a test talks about biological age, pace of ageing or an epigenetic clock, it's epigenetic. If it lists genes such as MTHFR, or mentions the folate or methionine cycle, it's genetic.

Neither type tells you your current folate or vitamin B12 levels. Only a blood test does that, which is why a one-off genetic test works best alongside occasional blood tests. If you'd like the background first, our guide to what methylation is covers the basics.

What to look for in a genetic methylation test

Most genetic methylation tests use the same basic method. A lab reads a panel of single-letter differences in your DNA, called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), from a cheek swab or saliva sample. Good labs do this step very reliably. What separates a useful test from a disappointing one is everything around it.

1. Coverage beyond MTHFR

MTHFR gets most of the attention, but it's one enzyme in one cycle. Look for a test that reports on the wider set of linked pathways and names the genes it reads in each. Stride groups them into five: the folate cycle, methionine cycle, transsulphuration pathway, BH4 cycle and urea cycle.

Genes worth seeing on the list include MTR and MTRR, which work with vitamin B12, and BHMT and PEMT, which affect how you use betaine and choline. CBS moves homocysteine towards glutathione, and COMT helps break down dopamine and adrenaline.

A longer gene list isn't automatically better. A shorter list of well-studied variants beats a long one padded with weak evidence, so check that the report is clear about what each result does and doesn’t mean.

2. An accredited laboratory

Your sample should be analysed at an accredited lab. Common standards include ISO 15189 for medical laboratories and, in the US, CLIA certification. Reputable providers are open about this. If you can't find any mention of the lab, ask before you buy.

3. A report you can act on

A list of genotypes means very little on its own. A good report explains in plain English what each variant does and links it to specific food, lifestyle or supplement choices. It should also point you to the blood markers that show whether a tendency is affecting you now.

4. Someone to talk it through with

Methylation results are easy to over-read, and the internet is full of alarming advice about MTHFR. A consultation with a trained practitioner keeps you focused on the few changes that matter, and can stop you buying supplements you don't need. Check whether one is included or costs extra.

5. Clear privacy terms

Your DNA is permanent, and it says something about your relatives too. Before you order, check whether your data is shared with third parties or used for research, whether that's opt-in, and whether you can have your data and sample deleted. Do this with any company, including us.

6. Whether you already have the data

If you've taken a 23andMe test, your raw data already includes MTHFR and many other methylation-related variants, so you may not need a new sample at all. The catch is that you're limited to the variants 23andMe's chip happened to measure.

The main options, compared

These are the main routes to a methylation test for buyers in the UK, Europe and the US as of October 2026. We've named products only where we've checked the details ourselves.

Stride DNA & Methylation Test

Our test uses an at-home cheek swab, analysed at accredited specialist laboratories, with results in about 10 working days. It's sold in the UK, Europe and the US. Every level covers all five methylation cycles, including MTHFR and COMT, and every level includes a 1:1 consultation with a Stride expert.

  • Core (£118.30): 19 genes across the five methylation cycles. This is enough if methylation is your only question.

  • Advanced (£188.30): adds nutrition and metabolism reports.

  • Optimal (£223.30): 110 genes, adding fitness, sleep, stress and skin.

Customers rate Stride 4.8 out of 5 from 420 reviews.

Optimal DNA Link, for 23andMe customers

If you already have a 23andMe raw data file, you can upload it to Optimal DNA Link and get Stride's reports without sending a new sample. Core includes 5 methylation reports, Advanced 29 reports and Optimal 46. For anyone who already has the file, it's the sensible first step, as long as you accept that coverage depends on what 23andMe measured.

Ultimate Human Wellness Genetic Methylation Test (UK)

This is Gary Brecka's own test, sold in the UK through the retailer Healf since November 2025, with Optimally Me as the laboratory partner. It costs £399 at the time of writing and reads 13 genes from a cheek swab: ACAT, AHCY, BHMT, CBS, COMT, MAOA, MTHFD1, MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, NOS3, SHMT and VDR. Results come online with a summary and references for each gene, a video from Brecka on each one, and lifestyle and supplement suggestions. A one-to-one review is sold separately.

If you follow Brecka's work and want his take on your results, it's the obvious choice. If you want more genes or a consultation included in the price, compare it with the options either side of it here. Our Gary Brecka methylation test post puts the two Brecka-linked tests side by side with ours.

10X Health Methylation+ (US)

10X Health System sells its Methylation+ Genetic Test for $599 at the time of writing. It reads 27 genes across 6 body systems from an at-home saliva sample and comes with a free wellness consultation. A broader Precision genetic test costs $1,299. Methylation+ is sold for the US market, where it's HSA/FSA eligible, and 10X doesn't sell it directly to UK customers.

Gary Brecka, who did much to popularise methylation testing, co-founded 10X. He and the company parted ways at the end of 2024, his name no longer appears on the product page, and he now sells the Ultimate Human test above. If you're in the US and like what 10X offers, it's a reasonable choice. Our post on the 10X Health methylation test goes into more detail.

Epigenetic (biological age) tests

Many companies sell these, using blood, saliva or cheek samples depending on the provider. They're interesting if you want to follow a biological age estimate over several years, but they say nothing about your methylation genes or nutrient needs. Different epigenetic clocks can also give the same person noticeably different ages, so if you're tracking change, stick with one provider.

In the UK, StrideOne takes another route to the same question. Its Stride BioAge is calculated from blood biomarkers with a validated algorithm and tracked as your bloods are retested every six months, alongside DNA and gut testing.

MTHFR-only tests

Some tests read only the two common MTHFR variants, C677T and A1298C. They answer one narrow question, and a single result in isolation can look far more significant than it is. If MTHFR is all you want to know, check whether it's already in your 23andMe raw data.

Which test suits you

Start with the question you want answered, then pick the test that answers it.

  • You want to understand your methylation genes and you live in the UK or Europe. Choose a genetic test that covers the main cycles, not just MTHFR. Stride's Core level does this; the higher levels are only worth it if you also want the nutrition, fitness or sleep reports.

  • You already have 23andMe data. Try Optimal DNA Link before paying for a new kit.

  • You're in the UK and want Gary Brecka's test. His Ultimate Human kit is sold through Healf for £399 and reads 13 genes. Stride's Core level reads 19 genes for £118.30 with a consultation included, so compare what each covers before you decide.

  • You're in the US and first heard about methylation through Gary Brecka or 10X. Both 10X Methylation+ and Stride's test are sold in the US. Compare the gene lists, what the consultation includes and the privacy terms, rather than the name on the box.

  • You want a biological age number. Buy an epigenetic test, or look at StrideOne if you're in the UK.

  • You have symptoms such as ongoing tiredness or pins and needles. See your GP first. A DNA test can't tell you if you're low in B12 or folate right now. A blood test can, and your GP can also check homocysteine.

  • You're not sure you need a test at all. Fair enough. We answer that separately in our honest look at whether methylation tests are worth it.

FAQs

What is the best methylation test in the UK?

For most people, a genetic test that covers the main methylation cycles, uses an accredited lab and includes an expert consultation. Stride's DNA and Methylation Test meets those criteria at every level. If you already have 23andMe data, Stride's Optimal DNA Link can analyse it without a new sample.

Is a DNA methylation test the same as a genetic methylation test?

Not always. Many consumer DNA methylation tests are genetic tests that read variants in methylation genes such as MTHFR. Others are epigenetic tests that measure methylation marks to estimate biological age. If the listing names genes, it's genetic; if it talks about biological age, it's epigenetic.

How many genes should a methylation test cover?

There's no magic number. Coverage across the linked cycles matters more than the total, so look for genes such as MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, BHMT, CBS and COMT, and check that the report explains what each result does and doesn’t mean.

Can I use my 23andMe data for a methylation report?

Yes. 23andMe raw data includes MTHFR and many other methylation-related variants. You can download the file from your 23andMe account and upload it to a service such as Stride's Optimal DNA Link, with no new sample needed.

Do I need a blood test as well as a methylation test?

Ideally, yes. A genetic test shows tendencies that never change. Blood tests for folate, active B12 and homocysteine show whether those tendencies are affecting you now, and they let you check that any changes you make are working.

The bottom line

The best methylation test is the one that answers your question. If you want to know how your genes shape your methylation and nutrient needs, choose a genetic test that covers the main methylation cycles and comes with proper support to interpret it.

If you already have 23andMe data, start there. If a biological age number is what you're after, an epigenetic test is the better buy. Whichever you choose, pair it with blood tests, because genes show tendencies and only bloods show what's happening now.
